BSNL officers oppose demotions, stage protest

Last Updated 27 April 2017, 18:20 IST

BSNL telecommunication junior officers and subdivision engineers started a three-day hunger strike under the aegis of the BSNL Officers’ Association in Chikkamagaluru on Tuesday.

The protest has been staged opposing demotions and urging for the fulfillment of various demands
A demand was placed before the Union Government in 2007, during the implementation of pay commission, to address to the problems of demotions and cutting of benefits. But the issues remain unsolved even to this day. Fights are being carried out from the past 10 years to convert executive- 2 grade posts to executive grade-3. But, instead of upgrading, the executive grade -2 posts are demoted to executive Grade-1, which is an injustice to the employees. The third pay commission recommendations should have been implemented with effect from January 1, 2017, which has not been done till today, the protestors said.

The discrimination of pay among the executive officers should be solved. The promotions should be timely. Direct appointments for the DGM and equivalent posts should be stopped. Such posts should be filled by promoting the existing staff, considering their seniority, BSNL Officers’ Association district committee Secretary A N Gopalakrishna.

Secretary Mukunda Jois said that each day 20 people will take part in the hunger strike.
As many as 20 officers and engineers took part on the first day of the stir, in the leadership of Association district secretary A N Gopalakrishna.
