BJP bristles at Congress' bangle taunt

Last Updated 02 May 2017, 19:52 IST

In a fierce response to Congress jibes on beheading of soldiers at the LoC, the BJP said the party that never gave its prime minister a free hand cannot blame the Modi government.

Insisting that the country, under its strong PM Narendra Modi, would respond to the mutilation of soldiers’ bodies by Pakistan army, BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao said: “A party that reduced its prime minister to a rubberstamp is offering gratuitous advice to the party that gave the country its strongest prime minister.”

“The Congress government had tied the hands of the armed forces, while the Modi government gave Pakistan jitters by mounting surgical strike and isolating it regionally and internationally,” Rao said.

The BJP is now under pressure to retaliate against Pakistan’s continuous attacks on army bases through militants and the beheading of two soldiers, the third such incident since Modi began his tenure in May 2014.

Pakistan’s adventurism did not seem to cease despite the surgical strike by Indian soldiers across the border in September. Law Minister Ravishankar Prasad described the attack as “the most despicable act against our soldiers... by the kind of shameful & cowardly treatment they gave their bodies”.
