The Supreme Court on Wednesday came to rescue of an HIV- afflicted woman, also suffering from partial retardation, for terminating her 26- week pregnancy.

The court directed for her medical examination by ordering the Union government to bring her to Delhi on Thursday from Patna.

A bench presided over by Justice Dipak Misra directed Additional Solicitor General P S Narasimha to furnish her medical report on Monday.

Activist advocate Brinda Grover brought the woman's plight into attention of the court. She said her matter was poorly handled by Bihar state government.

It was pleaded to the government for terminating her pregnancy when it was just 17 week old. But now after the delay, the foetus has become 26 week old, beyond the 20 week statutory limit mandated under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act.

Acting with due alacrity and absolute sympathy with the woman, the court has now ordered her medical examination by a panel of doctors from AIIMS New Delhi. The court has earlier intervened in critical cases and ordered termination of Pregnancy beyond the statutory bar, she said.
