Campaigns to increase admissions in government PU colleges

Last Updated 04 May 2017, 19:05 IST

This year, the Department of Pre-University Education (DPUE) will go all out in an attempt to increase enrolment in government pre-university colleges, through promotional campaigns on social media, local TV channels and house-to-house visits.

Principals of government colleges have been instructed to collect information of students in their neighbourhood who appeared for the SSLC exam this year. They will be getting in touch with the parents of students and impress them with details on the facilities and government schemes which will benefit their wards.

Circular issued
“Give information about the facilities available in the college, about the meritorious students and also the pass percentage in local TV channels. Design attractive pamphlets and use all forms of communication such as SMS, WhatsApp Messenger and Facebook to promote the colleges,” a circular issued by the department reads.

The department is also introducing two new schemes of conducting spoken English classes for students every Sunday and providing free textbooks to the meritorious SC/ST students through the ‘Book Bank’ scheme.

Principals may use Rs 1,000 from the corpus fund for government Pre-University colleges to carry out promotional activities.

Campaigns necessary
“If we do not conduct such campaigns, students will not enrol in government colleges in spite of having good facilities and faculty. We have a medium-size college and there are about 200 students in the first PU batch. I will try to increase it to 300,” said the principal of a pre-university college in the city.
