Infiltration to rise in summer, says Rawat

Trouble expected after exam results are out

Terrorist infiltration in Jammu and Kashmir will increase in the summer as the snow in the upper reaches of the Himalayas will start melting, said Army Chief General Bipin Rawat.

“The summer months have started, so like each year, the infiltration will commence”, he said on the sidelines of a book-release event.

Rawat had just returned to the national capital after spending two days in Kashmir, where he was briefed about the security situation by top commanders.

“We are taking (counter) measures. We have beefed up our counter-infiltration posture to take care of the situation,” Rawat said.

Sources in the army headquarters told DH that besides the anticipated spike in infiltration, the unrest in the Valley will also increase in a month or two, when the results of the Class X and XII board examinations are out.

“The number of stone-pelters will increase after the results are out. Those who fail the exams are likely to be targeted by anti-India elements to swell their ranks,” an officer said.

Speaking about the retaliation to Pakistan for the killing and mutilating the bodies  of two Indian soldiers earlier this week, the army chief said the army could share details of the actions only after its execution, reiterating the stance taken by his deputy, Lt Gen Sarath Chand, two days ago.
