Reports warn of attack on Amarnath yatra

Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra discussed the latest security situation in the state with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday.

Militant attacks and bank robberies have forced the launch of a massive combing operation in the Valley.
Vohra’s 45-minute discussion with Modi came a day after he met Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

The meeting followed intelligence inputs, which said that infiltration of terrorists from Pakistan are on the rise and that the Amarnath yatra could come under attack this year.

This year’s yatra is due to start on June 29 and conclude on August 7.Vohra also briefed Modi on the status of various development works in the state.

Though Vohra had earlier pressed the Centre to consider initiating a dialogue with the major political players in the state, the fresh spurt of violence in south Kashmir and along the Line of Control has left authorities with very little option.

The Centre has ordered for more troops to move into the Valley to flush out gunmen suspected to have infiltrated from across the border.

Modi is understood to have discussed with Vohra a possible timeline for things to cool down before any political initiative can be thought of, sources said.

Last week, when Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti called on Modi, she was told that no dialogue could take place until the violence stopped.

Militants on Thursday had attacked an army patrol that left a civilian dead and three personnel injured when the troops conducted what was described as the biggest search operation in over a decade in the Shopian district of south Kashmir.

Reports said choppers and surveillance drones were deployed to assist troops on the ground during the operation.
