Professor's house burgled; cash, jewellery stolen

A professor at the Raman Research Institute (RRI), Madan Rao is currently on a sabbatical carrying out research at the University of Santa Barbara, California, United States. His family is also with him. In Madan Rao’s absence, his friend Arvind was staying in the house.

The incident came to light when Arvind returned from work at 4:30 pm. According to Prof U R Rao, who lodged a complaint with Sanjaynagar police, Arvind found the front door locked from inside whereas the back grill door was broken open.

The bedroom was ransacked and gold ornaments - necklace, bracelet, two pairs of ear ring, finger ring and nose ring - were stolen. Several hundred Dollars and Euros, were also stolen, Prof Rao said.

“Police found a cigarette butt in the bathroom and a foot print in the living room during their investigation,” Prof Rao told Deccan Herald. But there’s been little progress since then as the police are yet to get a breakthrough, he said.

The value of the stolen items was yet to be ascertained, Prof Rao said adding that his son knew it better. Dr Madan Rao also holds a professor’s chair at the National Centre for Biological Science on New BEL Road.

Man stabs wife, flees

A man stabbed stabbed his wife after an argument, at Swatantra Yodhara Nagar in Laggere on Sunday. Sheela was admitted to a hospital and is said to be out of danger.
According to the police, Mohan Raj and Sheela, for 10 years with two children used to quarrel often as Mohan Raj was not employed. Things worsened when Mohan Raj began drinking at home. When Sheela objected, Raj took out a knife, stabbed Sheela in her stomach and fled, added the police, who are looking for him.
