Water shortage has affected two universities in the state — Akkamahadevi Women’s University in Vijayapura and Manipal University in Udupi district.

The water crisis at Akkamahadevi Women’s University has deepened with no water for the hostel inmates even for their basic needs.

The university authorities had declared a three-day holiday from May 6 to May 9 for the students, who left for their hometowns on Saturday. The students were told to vacate their hostel rooms on Friday night.

But they pleaded with the heads to let them stay for the night as they would find it difficult to get transport facilities at those hours. However, Registrar K P Srinath said in a press release that the university  would work  regularly  from May 8, as deputy commissioner has taken special measures to ensure water for the varsity campus.

Water shortage has been bothering the students for some time now and it aggravated a week ago. The water problem has hit 800 students in the three hostels on the campus. The hostel inmates brought the matter to the notice of the officials, but they turned a blind eye to it.

The worst affected among the students are the ones who are menstruating. The problem is so grave that a room of four students had to make do with just four litres of water a day, including for cooking purposes. Initially, they used to buy water supplied by tankers. But now, that supply also has stopped.

The holiday has been declared as a precaution, ahead of the upcoming exams. P G Tadasad, the special officer of the university, has promised to resolve the problem soon.

In Udupi district, with the water-level in Baje reservoir reaching dead storage level, Manipal University has taken a decision to wrap up semesters early and conduct examinations much earlier than previous years. Twenty-two institutes are under the university.

Manipal University Registrar Dr Narayan Sabhahit told DH that the semester was shortened for all other institutions, except the Kasturba Medical College as it is under the Medical Council of India.
