Women hockey players hone skills at Ponnampet

Women hockey players are being trained at the month-long camp organised by Hockey Coorg ahead of all women’s tournament. The camp underway at Government PU College, Ponnampet ground, is being attended by 30 budding hockey players.

In all, Hockey Coorg has 60 trained players, among whom two teams will be selected for Hockey India, as stipulated by the latter. The players will be classified as Below-22 (senior), Under-19 (junior) and Under-16 (sub-junior) teams before beginning the training sessions.

The same criterion is followed while sending teams for national-level tournaments. The afore-mentioned teams already have the credit of playing at national-level tournaments and winning bronze medals in each of the categories, living up to the expectations of their coaches.

The players include Sandhya, Yakshita, Lipitha, Raghavi, Usha, Kavana, Harinakshi, Teena, Sowjanya, Parvati, Vidya, Devi, Annapoorna, Ranjitha, Babita Kaveramma, Nivedita, Kadambari, Sumalatha, Sushmitha, Hema, Mrighana, Keerthana Deepti, Sowmya, Kumuda, B G Kaveri and M C Sandhya from the three taluks in the district.

Hockey Coorg chairman Buttiyanda Changappa, who is also the coach at sports hostel, member H N Aruna, coach Konerira Madhu and manager Poornima are supervising the training session. Both food and accommodation have been arranged at the Ponnampet Sports Hostel. Shashi Subramani, chairman of health and public education standing committee at the Zilla Panchayat is doing his mite for the success of the camp.
