Rain, strong winds wreak havoc in N-K dists

Heavy rain coupled with gusty winds wreaked havoc in several districts of North Karnataka on Monday.

Showers accompanied by strong winds lashed Bagalkot district in the early hours of Monday. Heavy winds blew away roofs of several houses and uprooted trees and electric poles. A girl was killed in Kiresuru village after a stone placed on the tin-sheet roof of her house fell on her. The deceased has been identified as Deepa. Bagalkot and surrounding areas received 18 mm of rain in an hour.

Several parts of Ballari district received good spell of rain on Sunday. The rain gauge in Sandur recorded 42.3 mm rainfall on Monday. A 12-year-old boy was killed and his grandmother grievously injured after a huge boulder ripped their house apart. The house is located at the base of the Ballari fort and the boulder came crashing following strong wind and rain. The deceased has been identified as Shivaraj. Three more persons sustained injuries in the incident. Hundreds of families have constructed illegal houses at the foothill of the fort.

Some stone pillars at “Saalu Mantapa” in Hampi were dislodged due to strong winds. Hosapete taluk received good rain late on Sunday night. Huge quantity of water had accumulated on the National Highway-50 on the outskirts of Hosapete. The work on widening of the National Highway stretch between Hosapete and Chitradurga is in progress.

Trees were uprooted at a few areas in Hubballi due to heavy rain which lashed the city on Sunday night and early on Monday morning. A tree which fell near S K Arts College at Vidyanagar damaged a bike. Trees were uprooted at Gardenpet, Makandar Oni, New Cotton Market and Vasanth Nagar. However, there were no casualties. Rainwater overflowed onto roads from clogged drainage. Power supply was disrupted in some areas for a while. Hubballi city received 30.6 mm rainfall on Sunday while Shiraguppi village in Hubballi taluk received 92.2 mm rain.

It rained heavily in parts of Belagavi district and surrounding areas for more than three hours. The service road along Pune-Bengaluru National Highway was flooded with rainwater accumulated in the adjacent farmlands. Low-lying areas such Vadagaon and Khasbag were waterlogged. Parts of Bailhongal, Kittur and Chikkodi also received rain for a while. Muddebihal taluk in Vijayapura district received heavy rain. Standing crops were damaged after water overflowed from Almatti left bank canal.

Lakshmeshwar in Gadag district received as much as 71.02 mm of rain in the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. A Northwest KSRTC bus with three passengers fell into an overflowing stream near Doddur. The passengers, conductor and driver of the bus were rescued by local people. A five-year-old boy drowned in a pit in Kadarageri street.

Gadag recorded 20.7 mm of rain while Shirahatti received 63.22 mm of rain, according to the press release issued by district statistics officer.
A pregnant woman was struck dead by lightning in Firdous Nagar of Bhatkal. The deceased has been identified as Sufia Zakir (26). Bhatkal town received heavy rain for an hour.
