Woman succumbs to burns

With 73 per cent burns, the struggle between life and death for Begum, a mother of four, was very painful, her brother Shabbir said. Her end came around 7:30 pm at the Burns Ward of Victoria Hospital.

“Her whole body, except the face, was charred. She hardly spoke, but her relentless cries reflected her suffering,” he said.

Begum was laid to rest at the cemetery on Tannery Road in the evening after her body was handed over to her family earlier in the day.

Although D J Halli police have arrested the prime suspect Jabina, her other family members who also allegedly assaulted Begum, are absconding and their house has been locked.

According to Shabbir, the suspects were pressurising them to withdraw the case. “They want to pass off the incident as suicide. And they are trying to rope in other neighbours who mutely witnessed the incident to testify before the police,” he said with a choked voice.
According to Shabbir, Jabina's family enjoys clout in the locality as they are financially strong and no one dares to go against them. But they will fight for justice, he said.
