Congress president Sonia Gandhi is expected to convene a meeting of leaders of Opposition parties next Thursday to decide on its nominee for the elections to the posts of President and vice president in July.

The meeting of the leaders caps hectic negotiations by Sonia to forge Opposition unity against the backdrop of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's string of electoral victories.

Sonia has held consultations with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury, NCP supremo Sharad Pawar, CPI leader D Raja and JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav.

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi had reached out to SP president Akhilesh Yadav and DMK leader M K Stalin to ascertain their views on the presidential elections.

The names of Mahatma Gandhi’s great grandson Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, Sharad Yadav and former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar were being talked about as probable candidates.

“At the moment, the only serious candidate from the opposition camp could be Gopalkrishna Gandhi,” a senior Congress leader pointed out, adding that Pawar had already ruled himself out as a possible candidate.
