Four officials of the Prisons Department were suspended on the charge of dereliction of duty on Monday after undertrial prisoner Mohammed Rahman Hussain (25), a Bangladesh national accused in illegal immigration case, escaped from the district prison on Sunday evening.

District Jail Superintendent Mari Gowda said told DH that G M Mahesh and A S Koutker, both chief warders and R M Patil and Nandish, head warders, have been suspended for dereliction of duty.

The possibility of Hussain escaping from the prison by jumping the wall is slim as no rope or any metal tool was found on the premises of the prison. So, he must have managed to escape from the main gate of the prison during the change of shifts. A case has been registered with the Jayanagar police in this regard, he added.

Gowda said the Bhadravathi Old Town police had arrested Hussain from near the railway station on April 15 as he had no visa and other documents a foreigner should have. He was produced before the court in Bhadravathi and remanded in judicial custody. He had appeared before the court on May 20 and had returned to the prison.
