Following the havoc caused by pre-monsoon showers on Saturday, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad on Monday cancelled leaves of officers from joint commissioners to assistant engineers at the ward level.

Prasad, along with Mayor G Padmavathi and her deputy M Anand, held an emergency meeting on Monday with senior officials on rain preparedness. The commissioner directed the officials to set right the communication network and act rapidly in the event of any exigencies. The officials were directed to identify all low-lying areas prone to water-logging and rectify the problems.

Prasad directed officials to assign such locations to each engineer and make sure that they take responsibility for preventing flooding.

In all, 72 control rooms, including those at head offices and eight zonal offices, will be established in the next three days. The forest cell of the BBMP will have 21 response teams, each having a vehicle, men and machines. These teams will act quickly and clear roads in the event of trees uprooting or branches crashing on the roads.

Mayor Padmavathi directed officials to follow the commissioner’s instructions strictly. She warned officials of stern action if she receives complaints about jurisdictional disputes among response teams.
