The Bengaluru Urban district authorities on Wednesday recovered 498.22 acres of government land encroached upon by five people at Chalamakunte near Bagalur under the Bengaluru North (Additional) taluk.

The total market value of the recovered land is Rs 1,500 crore, the officials said. Bengaluru North (Additional) tahsildar B R Manjunath told DH that the land grabbers had planted eucalyptus trees on a huge tract of land and had claimed rights over it. Recently, assistant commissioner of north additional sub-division Ranganatha had passed an order rejecting the claim. He had also directed the tahsildar to make amendments to the land records in favour of the government and recover the land.

Based on the orders, the recovery process was started on Wednesday. About 50 government officials, led by , Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner V Shankar, along with a posse of policemen swooped down on the place and took possession of the land.

Manjunath said people who had occupied the land put up a strong resistance. The officials told them to approach the High Court of Karnataka, if they have any complaint. They told the occupants that the government records show that the land belongs to the state government. Some houses, built on the land, were also taken into government custody. The occupants were told to vacate them at the earliest. The surveyors demarcated the boundary and dug up trenches to claim rights over the land.
