Australia clinch series

Australia, who won the first Test in Wellington by ten wickets, clinched the second Test by 176 runs.

The visitors were bundled out for 231 in their first innings while New Zealand finished their first essay on 264, 33 runs ahead of the visiting side.

Australia declared their second essay at 511 for eight and had New Zealand on the backfoot at 185 for five on day four. With 294 runs needed to tie the series, the Kiwis put up a fight but was of little substance against Johnson’s pace.

Johnson, who had picked up four wickets in the first innings, knocked over six wickets in New Zealand’s second essay to bag the man of the match award.

New Zealand started the day 293 runs behind and without much hope of a draw; certainly not a win. Brendon McCullum (51) and Martin Guptill (58) managed to secure half-centuries each but their effort was never going to be enough to deny Australia the win.

Bollinger strikes
McCullum brought up a his half-century off 93 balls, with nine fours and one six, but his innings came to a close when he was caught by Mike Hussey off Bollinger.

Guptill, too, reached his half ton but this time it was Johnson who spelled the end, when he found an edge to Ricky Ponting. Tim Southee (45) walked in and almost immediately took it to the Australian bowlers as he closed in on scoring one of the fastest Test fifties but he was dismissed by Johnson and that meant the end of New Zealand’s innings.

Skipper Michael Clarke and off-spinner Nathan Hauritz came up with one wicket apiece to give good support to the pace bowlers in demolishing the hosts.
