Channelising a passion

Last Updated 28 May 2017, 18:28 IST

Hailing from Chikkamagaluru, young designer and fashion blogger Nikita Mahendra is living her passion to the fullest. The 24-year-old has recently started her own boutique, ‘Desi Hues’, in Jayanagar, where she designs Indian, Western and Indo-Western outfits for women. In a chat with Tapan Menezes, Nikita talks about her journey and the challenges involved in her profession.

When did you start blogging?
I started my blog ‘StyleChirp’ two years ago. I’ve always loved trying out new styles and experimenting with different ways of wearing the same outfits. When I did something different with seemingly boring clothes, a lot of people asked me where I picked up my outfits from and I thought of starting my own page to share insights from my wardrobe.

What inspired you to take the leap from being a blogger to a designer?
I always dreamt of starting my own boutique and blogging was my stepping stone into the world of designing. It helped me build a strong network of people who believed in my designs and style.

Difficulties you face as a designer...
Sometimes, it becomes increasingly difficult to manage my clients and staff. I have to keep track of the cashflow and other aspects as well. It’s challenging but I’m learning the ropes of the business.

Your strengths and weaknesses...
I can’t stay idle, that’s both my strength and weakness. If I manage to finish working on my clients’ outfits for the day, then I immediately start work on designing my own collection or experimenting with fabrics lying around.

How do you go about a complicated design that a client has asked for?
I believe there’s nothing like a tough design. I love working with clients who are open to experimenting. It’s exciting to listen to their requirements and then pitch my own ideas to them. Watching the design come to life and seeing their face light up makes my day.

How do you deal with an unhappy customer?
It all boils down to perspective so I look at what I’ve learned from the situation and move on. For example, I now make it a point to note down every tiny quirk a client has so that it doesn’t become a problem for us later.

What can customers expect at ‘Desi Hues’?
‘Desi Hues’ is here to experiment with the most exciting designs. It’s all about figuring out what looks fabulous on a client and then giving it my all to provide them with exactly what was envisioned. One can expect class and vibrance.
