State to expand mulberry cultivation

Speaking to reporters in Bangalore on Wednesday, Sericulture Minister Venkataramanappa said the present mulberry cultivation in the State is around 70,000 hectares. With farmers from Mysore and several districts of North Karnataka showing keen interest in mulberry cultivation the extent could cross one lakh hectares next year, he said.

Venkataramanappa said five officials in the Ramananagar silk cocoon market have been transferred and one official in Kudur in Magadi have been suspended on charges of dereliction of duty. The department also plans to build a hi-tech market adjacent to the Ramanagar cocoon market, he said.
