Shaktidhama, a voluntary organisation in Mysuru, supported by actor Rajkumar’s family, mourned the death of Parvathamma Rajkumar, who passed away in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

The inmates of Shaktidhama were in tears as soon as the news trickled in and they paid a floral tribute to the portrait of Parvathamma, the founder-president and backbone of the organisation.

Speaking to DH, Shaktidhama executive secretary G S Jayadev said, “It was around Dasara in 1998, when the Police department rescued around 800 women who were involved in prostitution. But, there was no rehabilitation centre to house these women. The then Mysuru police commissioner Kempaiah contacted Kannada matinee idol Rajkumar and explained him about the plight of destitute women and, sought his help. The issue was brought to the notice of Parvathamma, who took the initiative and founded Shaktidhama,” he said.

Suttur Mutt seer Shivaratri Deshikendra Swami donated 1.5 acres for the purpose. A musical night ‘Rajkumar Sangeetha Rasasanje’ was organised at the open air theatre of Manasagangotri and Rs 45 lakh was raised. It was used for the construction of the building. Shaktidhama officially came into existence in 2001. Parvathamma took care of the organisation since its inception, he added.

Shaktidhama provides shelter to rape victims, those rescued from prostitution, victims of domestic violence, human trafficking and destitutes. The women are given training in life skills to instil confidence. Around 4,000 women have been benefited so far, it is said.

Parvathamma used to visit Shaktidhama once a month and also whenever she was on her way to Gajanur, the native village of Rajkumar. She also used to supply groceries and other essential items for the rehabilitation centre. However, due to ill-health, her visits became irregular and her last visit was seven months ago, Jayadev said.

Puneeth Rajkumar, son of Parvathamma, is said to have donated his remuneration from ‘Kotyadhipathi’ programme on a private tevelision channel, to Shaktidhama. The government has so far released Rs 3.5 crore funds, Jaydev added.

However, Parvathamma’s dream of setting up an educational institution for the underprivileged girls could not be realised despite purchasing four acres, due to legal hassles.
