Navy sailor dies under suspicious circumstances

A young sailor Vikash Yadav was found dead under suspicious circumstances on board INS Rana under Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam during the wee hours of Thursday. The 21-year-old Sailor allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service weapon when he was on sentry duty. Vikash Yadav was a native of Bhind area in Madhya Pradesh.

Yadav, according to Naval sources was working at the electrical mechanical power class-1 of the ship. The matter came to notice after the sailors on the ship heard the gun shot.Vikash was immediately rushed to INHS-Kalyani where the doctors declared him brought dead. The Malkapuram police who have jurisdiction over the naval dockyard area have registered a case and investigation is on to ascertain the reasons behind Vikash’s extreme step.

The Navy in its press statement, however, did not specify reasons behind the young sailor’s death. “Vikash Yadav sustained a bullet injury whilst on duty as Security Sentry in the early hours this morning on onboard INS Rana.  He was immediately shifted to the local naval hospital where he was declared brought dead.  His family and local police have been informed of this unfortunate incident. A Board of Inquiry is being ordered to investigate the incident.” the statement said

INS Rana is a Rajput-class destroyer in active service with the Indian Navy. She was commissioned on 28 June 1982. She is a redesigned Soviet Kashin-class guided-missile destroyer.
