District In-charge Minister Pramod Madhwaraj said transgenders too have the right to live a respectable life.

Speaking at a programme by the District Mahila Congress to commemorate the birth centenary of former prime minister Indira Gandhi, Madhwaraj said the people’s mindset towards transgenders should be changed.

The minister said that former prime minister the late Indira Gandhi was instrumental in laying the foundation stone for the development of the country.

She took the charge in the most critical phase and ensured a smooth sail in the process of governance, he said adding that she is a significant leader of the 20th century.

Madhwaraj said the state government has provided better life for transgenders. He also called upon transgenders to avail of the benefits available to them and apply for sites, if they are eligible under the prescribed criteria. Under the Maitri scheme, transgenders are offered Rs 500 per month as pension.

For the first time, the initiative has helped transgenders to join the mainstream of society, he claimed.
