Gujarat state topper opts for sanyas over college, set to become monk

After having passed his higher secondary board exams with flying colours, a 17-year-old boy has decided to renounce worldly life to become a Jain monk.

Varshil Shah from Ahmedabad secured a near-perfect score of 99.9% in the recently concluded Plus Two board exams. While his fellow students are pondering over the best college degree programmes to enhance their job prospects, Shah would take ‘diksha’ for renunciation from his Surat-based guru Muni Shri Kalyan Ratna Vijayji.

Shah, who met his guru three years ago, showed signs of interest in the divine as he chose to celebrate his success in the board exam results, announced on May 27, by visiting a temple.

His mother Amiben and father Jigarbhai, an income tax official, are happy with their son’s decision.  The couple raised their children –Shah and his older sister Jinini – in a simple environment.
