40-min check for girl in 'hijab' at Vidhana Soudha

A college student wearing a ‘hijab’ (headscarf) had to undergo security check for about 40 minutes at  Vidhana Soudha on Wednesday after marshals raised “security concerns”.

The girl was part of a group of students from a college near Dairy Circle who were on a visit to Vidhana Soudha to witness the state Legislature Session.

A source said the marshals initially asked the student to remove the hijab, but when she refused, a woman marshal took her to a cabin and subjected her to security check and frisking for at least 40 minutes. The student was later allowed to enter the premises.

“Security marshals do their routine checks for lighters, matchboxes etc. This was part of security protocol followed by them inside the premises and nothing beyond it. We did not subject any student with such description to any checks,” said a senior police officer.

It was later clarified that security checks were just a “routine procedure” with no intent to harass any individual over religious attire.
