Shettar raps govt over Hilori phone-tapping row

Last Updated 07 June 2017, 20:38 IST

BJP leader Jagadish Shettar said the phone tapping incident pertaining to the police department indicates that the administration has collapsed in the state.

In the Legislative Assembly On Wednesday, Leader of the Opposition Shettar raised the issue of Ajai Hilori, the then DCP (West), Bengaluru reportedly leaking excerpts of an audio conversation between some Kannada activists and IGP rank officer K S R Charan Reddy last September, to a section of the media.

The conversation is said to have taken place during the Cauvery agitation. Reddy had submitted a report to the then police commissioner, furnishing evidence of Hilori’s involvement in leaking the conversation.

Shettar said phones of even anti-nationals cannot be tapped without the permission of the authorities concerned. He wondered who had authorised Hilori to tap the phone. “Had the home department or the government permitted the tapping? This incident only shows that the administration has collapsed in Karnataka. Reddy had twice complained to his superiors. Now, he has complained to police chief Rupak Kumar Dutta,” he said.

Minister R V Deshpande told the member that the issue was serious and that home minister would reply to it later.
