Accident victim's heart transplanted into 59-yr-old

Bengaluru traffic police created an eight-kilometre green corridor from Columbia Asia Hospital, Hebbal to M S Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre, Mathikere to transport the heart of a 25-year-old youth, who had met with an accident.

The recipient of the heart was a 59-year-old man who is a silk merchant from Kolar. The donor was a resident of Doddaballapur, Bengaluru Rural. He had sustained severe head injuries after he fell from a tractor that he was travelling by, on May 26. He was admitted in Columbia Asia Hospital and, on Tuesday doctors declared him brain dead. The family later consented for a multi-organ donation.

The recipient was suffering from a prolonged illness called dilated cardiomyopathy, where the heartbeat rate drops. He had been suffering from this medical condition for the last five years and was asked to undergo a heart transplant six months ago.

“His family had been waiting for a long time. They are happy now,” said Dr Nagamallesh U M, senior consultant cardiologist and heart transplant physician, who was part of the five-member team of doctors who conducted the surgery.

“The patient is now stable and may be discharged in three weeks,” said Dr Nagamallesh.
