Army foils sixth infiltration bid along LoC in 48 hours

Army foiled sixth infiltration bids along the Line of Control (LoC) in last 48-hours as five more militants were killed while trying to infiltrate from Uri sector of north Kashmir's Baramulla district on Friday.

The Army has killed 12 militants and foiled six infiltration bids since Wednesday. "In the last 48 hours, infiltration attempts have been foiled at the Gurez, Machil, Naugam and Uri sectors. 12 armed intruders have been eliminated so far,"the army said in a statement.

While three infiltrators were killed in Nowgam sector of Kupwara district on Thursday, four more were killed in Machhil sector of the same district on Wednesday. On Friday, sources said troops noticed movement of a group of heavily armed militants at Gohalta Top in Uri sector trying to sneak into Indian territory from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) in Uri sector.

As the troops challenged the militants, they opened fire which was retaliated, ensuing a gunbattle in which five militants have been killed so far, they said and added the search operation in the area was going on.

PRO defence Col Rajesh Kalia while confirming the death of five militants in the encounter said the operation was in progress.

Two soldiers had been injured when soldiers of 4 JAKLI came under fire from militants near Kikkar Post and Anil Post at Gohalta Top in Uri sector after they were concluding a search operation in the area. Sources said massive search and combing operations by the Army are going on in  Nowgam, Machil, Keran and Uri sectors near the LoC .

The Army statement said the intruders were being provided active support, including covering fire (heavy calibre artillery) by Pakistani army posts on the LoC to assist them to enter the Kashmir Valley.

According to official figures 43 militants have been killed along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir this year while the Army has been successful in preventing 23 infiltration attempts in the same period.

In 2015, militants made 28 infiltration attempts along the LoC by while last year the number rose to 88 infiltration attempts . A total of 59 Army personnel have lost their lives in counter-terror operations in J&K since 2016, the records reveal.

“There is pressure on militants waiting on launching pads to infiltrate due to depleting number of militants in the State in view of successes achieved by security forces,” sources said and added the Army has enhanced its capability and boosted its strategy to check the infiltration attempts on the LoC.
