In early morning drive, footpath encroachments cleared in Hassan

CMC authorities remove illegal structures at Udayagiri Layout

Illegal buildings and other structures that had come up on the footpath at Udayagiri in the city were removed in the early morning drive launched by City Municipal Council authorities on Sunday.

The civic body has been conducting the drive to clear encroachment on footpath and government land for the past few days. CMC’s drive of clearing encroachments on footpath has come as a relief for the pedestrians.

The city’s footpath had shrunk due to illegal advertisement hoardings, compound, sheds and indiscriminate dumping of construction materials and street hawkers. The pedestrians were forced to walk on the streets endangering their lives.

Following the complaints by the residents, CMC president Anil Kumar and officials visited several areas where encroachment was rampant and served notices to the encroachers.

For first few days, the CMC officials with the help of police cleared hawkers, petty shops and fruit and flower vendors who had occupied the footpath in front of BSNL office.

On Sunday, the officials pressed excavators and earthmovers into service and razed buildings and shops that were not cleared/vacated despite notices.

The best part of the 80 feet road in Udayagiri Layout has been encroached upon. Garbage has been dumped on the either side of the Outer Ring Road. The stink emanating from the piles of trash has made the lives of the residents and motorists miserable. The several pockets in the layout and on 80-feet road have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Udayagiri Residents Welfare Association president B N Ramaswamy felt that footpath encroachment clearance drive should be conducted regularly. Action should be taken against violators, and CMC officials should not yield to any pressure. The public should also extend support, he said.

Speaking to DH, CMC president Anil Kumar said, “A few had encroached upon the footpath erecting name boards, sheds and shops, leaving no space for the pedestrians. Moreover, the shopkeepers did not respond to their pleas and notices. Hence, the drive is being conducted as per law. The shopkeepers should voluntarily vacate the place,” he said.
