18,000 Pourakarmikas will be rendered jobless in Bengaluru
The State government’s decision to regularise only 10,000 Pourakarmikas will render at least 18,000 Pourakarmikas jobless.

Minister for Social Welfare H Anjaneya on Tuesday announced that the government will take a decision on June 20 regarding the regularisation of 10,000 Pourakarmikas on contract. The government had earlier announced that after regularising the Pourakarmikas there will be no Pourakarmikas on contract in the municipalities. The State government has made it clear that it is abolishing the system of hiring Pourakarmikas on contract.

However, Palike records show that 28,000 Pourakarmikas on contract are drawing salaries every month whereas it has about 3,000 Pourakarmikas on Palike’s roll. The decision to hire only 10,000 out of 28,000 Pourakarmikas will deal a severe blow on the remaining workers.

Rajya Guttige Pourakarmikara Sangha president Narayan said the government had notified that there should be a certain number of Pourakarmikas for the population of the city. It has taken 2001 census and not the 2011 census into account to regularise Pourakarmikas due to which it agreed to regularise only 10,000 or 11,000 Pourakarmikas and not all of them. He had no answer to the fate of rest of the Pourakarmikas.

The State Safai Karmachari Ayog chairman M R Venkatesh who too participated in the strike on Tuesday on behalf of workers has junked BBMP’s list of Pourakarmikas on contract. “The list of Pourakarmikas on contract is bogus. There are only 12,000 to 14,000 Pourakarmikas on contract in BBMP. Palike is misleading the city,” he said.

The reaction drew a strong reaction from the garbage contractors. “The Ayog president is wrong. There are 28,000 Pourakarmikas in the city. If that was not the case, the city would have been in the throes of garbage,” said a contractor requesting anonymity. He said many contractors have introduced the biometric system to register the attendance of the Pourakarmikas and their number is much more than the total number of Pourakarmikas to be regularised.
