BJP to picket Soudha on July 10 for farm loan wavier

The principal Opposition in the Legislative Council, the BJP, on Tuesday demanded that the government should waive farm loans immediately in the interest of drought-hit farmers in the state.

Leader of the Opposition K S Eshwarappa warned that the BJP will intensify its protest seeking farm loan waiver in the coming days. “Our party president B S  Yeddyurappa will soon organise a three-day massive protest rally of farmers seeking waiver of farm loan. Over one lakh farmers, led by Yeddyurappa, will picket the Vidhana Soudha on July 10,” he added.

Eshwarappa blamed the state government for its lack of commitment to rescue farmers who are in a debt trap. “The state government should not demand that the Central government waive farm loans. It  should resort to borrowings, if necessary, to waive farm loans,” he said.

The BJP leader also charged the government with complete failure in handling the drought. He demanded that the government allocate Rs 3,000 crore for implementing rural drinking water supply schemes in drought-affected places.

However, Revenue Minister Kagodu Thimmappa said that the state government is ready to waive farm loans in cooperative societies if the central government writes off loans availed by farmers for themselves from commercial banks.
