Social media frenzy for memes has left another one shamed in Kerala

The social media frenzy for instant memes has left another one shamed, this time in Kerala. An image of a man lying down on the seat of a Kochi Metro coach started doing the Facebook rounds on Friday. Soon, it was widely shared with comments on how the “drunk” man was causing shame to Kerala, barely a week after the state’s first metro rail was opened.

On Saturday, a television channel traced the man to Kidangoor in Angamaly. The man internet trolls celebrated with a dash of sarcasm and outrage is Eldho, a hearing and speech impaired man who, according to his family, was only resting in the coach, disturbed after a visit to his ailing brother.

Eldho’s son Basil told the channel that the family was returning after visiting Eldho’s brother at the Ernakulam General Hospital and Eldho agreed to his son’s request for travelling in the Metro. “He appeared disturbed as we entered the coach,” he said. The family and colleagues of Eldho, who works in the State Headload Workers Welfare Board, wanted him to be “left alone”, the report said.

Even as apologies emerged on social media after the report, debates were still on regarding “excuses” to defy rules in public spaces.
