Sanjay Dutt summoned for 'Jhappi' remark

Munnabhai had, while addressing an election rally in Pratapgarh on April 16 last year, said he was ready to give “jadu ki jhappi” (magic hug) to Mayawati if she so wanted.

Chief judicial magistrate A K Tewari has directed Dutt to appear before the court on April 24 when the charge sheet filed by the police against him came up for hearing on Saturday.

Finding his remarks “objectionable,”  the police had registered a case against him in Kotwali police station of the town. The Investigating Officer had also tried to meet Munnabhai in Mumbai but failed in his attempt.

According to the law the film star could face a three-month sentence if convicted by the court. A similar charge sheet against Munnabhai has been filed in the Barabanki district court while a case was registered against him in Mau district also for making a similar remark on Mayawati.

Dutt later explained that he had made the remarks in a lighter vein and had expressed regret if they had hurt the sentiment of the BSP supremo.
