Chaos mars Udupi CMC meeting, visitor manhandled

The general body meeting of CMC ended abruptly on Thursday following a fight and arguments among the ruling party councillors which led to the manhandling of a man who had come to watch the meeting proceedings.

The problem started when a Congress councillor charged that councillor Geetha Shet had inaugurated the road laid using the funds released by the MLA. Following the agruments, Geetha tendered her resignation demanding justice. She also called her confidant Rony D’Mello as a witness for her innocence and claimed that she was not part of the inauguration of the road intentionally.

This led to a huge hue and cry. At this juncture, Rony, who came inside without the permission of the House, was about to begin his statement. The Congress members pushed him out and also assaulted him.

The ruling party members claimed that it was an attempt of self-defence, while the Opposition BJP members termed the incident as an inhuman and act of rowdies.

CMC president Meenakshi Madhav Bannanje said that she would have sorted out the issue separately and there was no need to create a problem in the meeting.

She said that she would not accept Geetha’s resignation letter as it is a trivial issue and would be sorted out by the party’s senior leaders. The Opposition, which could not tolerate the developmental works of Congress, is creating nuisance, she charged.

BJP to stage protest

Meanwhile, the district BJP has announced that a huge protest rally would be taken out on Friday condemning the act of the Congress councillors.

Speaking to the media persons, the district BJP president Mattar Ratnakar Hegde said the Congress members have shown disrespect to their own party colleague. “They have tried to molest the woman councillor and also dragged her unnecessarily. For the first time, the CMC meeting witnessed such a turmoil and such a shameful incident. This would remain a black spot in the history of the temple town and the CMC,” he charged.

Hedge and other BJP leaders demanded immediate resignation of the CMC president for her incapacity to handle the crisis. She was silent though her party colleague was manhandled by her own party members. Rony D’Mellow is innocent and he has no idea of the rules and regulations of the House. It was an attempt to murder and the poor man was kicked and severely assaulted by the Congress members. It shows the rowdism and dictatorship of the Congress members. The CMC administration has become worst, they charged.

Hegde also demanded the immediate suspension of the CMC Commissioner Manjunathayya or he should be transferred to other distinct.

The party would also approach the police officials and brief them about the incident, he added.

‘Law will take its own course’
Reacting to a question on the behaviour of the Congress councilors at the CMC meeting, District In-Charge Minister Pramod Madhwaraj said that he is not aware of it. However, he said he would take appropriate action after getting details about the incident.

He said the law would take its own course of action, if the party’s members are found guilty. He said he would strongly condemn the incident, if it is true and also speak to the district Congress president to initiate disciplinary measures against the guilty. On the floor of the house, true democracy exists when the members criticise the loopholes in the administration, he said.
