Man stabs neighbour 25 times, steals Rs 36,000 from her house

The police have arrested a dismissed pygmy collector of a cooperative society who had stabbed a 20-year-old woman to death and stolen Rs 36,000 from her house in Kumbalgod on Wednesday night.

Kavya was alone at her house when her neighbour and Venkatesh (20) stabbed her 20-25 times, the police said.

According to the police, Kavya was an employee of Mahalakshmi Cooperative Society in Nagadevanahalli. A month ago, she quit her job and was staying at her mother’s house in Kumbalgodu to help her sister’s school-going son.

Venkatesh was a pygmy collector with the same cooperative society and had lost his job three months ago for misappropriating Rs. 85,000. The society staff had threatened to lodge a police complaint against him if he failed to return the money in a couple of months. Venkatesh had returned Rs 45,000 to the society recently, the police said.

On Wednesday evening, Venkatesh learnt that Kavya’s boyfriend Puneeth had repaid Rs 36,000 he had borrowed from her. Subsequently, Venkatesh went to Kavya’s house around 9.30 pm, stabbed her 20 to 25 times and fled with Rs. 36,000. He misled the police stating he had seen two men on a bike  near Kavya’s house that night.

Based on call detail records, the police picked Puneeth for questioning. He told the police that he had paid Rs 36,000 to Kavya. The police found the cash was missing from her house.

The police suspected Venkatesh’s role after they learnt that he had misappropriated money from the society. As Venkatesh’s statements to the police were inconsistent, they detained him. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime.

The police have recovered Rs 36,000 from him. After killing Kavya, Venkatesh had  disposed of his blood stained clothes and weapon at a nearby place. They were tracked by sniffer dogs, the police said.
