Govt tells US 'entire Kashmir is India's'

Last Updated 29 June 2017, 19:33 IST

The government on Thursday said that it reiterated to the US administration that entire state of Jammu and Kashmir was an integral part of India.

The government was responding to criticised by the Opposition Congress party for not objecting to the use of the term “Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir” by the American administration during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent meeting with US President Donald Trump.

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre initially justified the use of the phrase in a US State Department statement. It, however, came out with a fresh statement, after the Congress pointed out that India had protested against the use of the term by United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, as recently as on June 7.

“India’s position that the entire State of Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India is well known. The US government has been apprised of the same once again,” Gopal Baglay, official spokesperson of  said on Thursday.

The MEA justification came after the Opposition Congress slammed the government for not objecting to use of the term  during Modi’s maiden meeting with Trump.
