S R Patil, member of the Legislative Council, assumed charge as the working president of the state Congress (North) at a function at Koodalasangama in the district on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, K C Venugopal, AICC General Secretary in charge of Karnataka, called upon the party workers to begin preparations for next year’s Assembly elections. Venugopal said it is Karnataka which came to the Congress’ rescue whenever the party faced a crisis at the national level.

He advised partymen to shun their differences and work unitedly for the party’s victory in the election. Venugopal challenged state BJP president B S Yeddyurappa to pressure Prime Minister Narendra Modi to waive loans taken by farmers from nationalised banks. He riduculed the former chief minister for eating food brought from the hotel at a Dalit’s house.
