Author and translator Bhaskar Chattopadhyay finished his schooling from Don Bosco High School, Dibrugarh, and his graduation from St Xavier’s College, Kolkata. He has been living and working in Bengaluru for 14 years now. Among his translations is the anthology of short stories titled 14: Stories That Inspired Satyajit Ray, and among his original works are the mystery novels Patang, Penumbra and Here Falls The Shadow.

Excerpts from an interview:

What about writing excites you?
It’s the storytelling that excites me. The fact that I can keep my readers engaged in a good story.

Your favourite author?
I won’t be able to name just one. Jim Corbett, O Henry, Agatha Christie, Satyajit Ray have all had big influences on my writing.

Your current read...
Collected essays by Ritwik Ghatak.

As a child, your best book?
The short stories of O Henry.

The best place to sit and write...
My desk, sometimes my couch.

If you were an actor, who would you be?
Someone like Balraj Sahni or Cary Grant.

You would most like to be stranded on a deserted island with?
A working satellite phone, thank you very much.

If not a writer, you’d be...
A filmmaker.

What keeps you awake at night?
Sometimes the idea of a good story, at other times a story I am not entirely satisfied with.

Are you a fitness freak?
I’m an absolute freak when it comes to fitness. I can sleep on a yoga mat for hours.

What do you do to unwind?
Other than sleeping on yoga mats? Let me see. Eat good food, watch movies, and relax in the pool.

Ideal place to holiday...
I like Goa a lot. I also love relatively unknown small towns.

The music you like most...
Pancham, all the way.

Your most cherished dream...
That my readers would love what I write.

Message for aspiring writers...
Please write a lot. Don’t worry about anything else, just write.

Any nightmares?
Of course, I am sleeping on yoga mats, what do you expect?

Your pet project?
My readers know me as a thriller and mystery writer. Which is why a love story that I am writing is a pet project of mine.

My own imagination, by and large.

Bengali cuisine, also Mughlai.

A sport you’d like to support...
Table Tennis.

One person you admire...
Satyajit Ray, but I am not in awe of him.

Saving the greenery of our planet.

I love writing, so I am enjoying life right now.

Lots, but what’s the point of talking about them anymore?
