Study Abroad

Dear Madam,
I have completed BCA through correspondence course.  I would like to pursue MBA in Canada in the field marketing and finance (dual specialisation), and business analytics. Could you please suggest some good universities abroad for these courses.  Thank you in advance.
A student

Dear Student,
In Canada, University of Waterloo, University of Toronto, Ryerson, McGill, University of British Columbia, York and Western University offer good MBA programmes. If you are open to other countries, I would recommend New Zealand which has low tuition fees. University of Canterbury in Christchurch offers MBA & MBM programs in your specialisations.

Dear Madam,
I am a first year student of the five-year MSc Maths+BTech course at BITS Pilani, Hyderabad. I had scored 92% in my CBSE in 2016. My SAT-1, SAT Subject test scores were 1970 and Math-800, Physics-800, Chemistry-770.  I had applied for admission in several universities abroad this year and already received seven admits. I am a bit confused now. I always dreamt of finishing college in a foreign university. Is it worth going to these universities leaving BITS, considering an expense of Rs 40-60 lakh. If yes, which course should I choose? Please advise.
A student

Dear Student,
First, congratulations on all the offers and scholarships you have received! BITS Pilani is a very good university and if you have already started your course here, I would advise you to continue studying here.

Dear Madam,
I am a student of first year MTech (thermal power engineering). I want to do higher studies (PhD) abroad. Please guide me.
A student

Dear Student,
To be accepted into a good university for your PhD, follow these steps:
Narrow down your research interest and the topic. Go to the websites of different universities, then read up on various research carried out by professors in your subject area. Write to the professors telling them about your research interest.

Since most PhD programmes are fully funded, you need to convince the professors that you will be an asset to their department and are worthy of their grant. While you are still pursuing your MTech, try and get a paper published.Students who wish to pursue a PhD should have some published work to their credit. Universities need to see that you have a flair for writing and research. Also remember to take your GRE and TOEFL iBT exam and get high scores.

Dear Madam,
I am a second year BE student (Biotechnology). I want to do my MS abroad. Could you please throw light on different programmes offered for Biotech students. What will be the best time for me take up TOEFL? Is it better if I take it after the third year or after the final year?
Anu

Dear Anu,
Please take your GRE & TOEFL iBT while you are in your third year. You will apply for admissions at the beginning of your final year, during which time you should have all your scores ready. You could do your MS in Biotechnology, Food Sciences, Health and Nutrition, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Microbiology etc. For information on universities, please visit www.umaaswani.com

Dear Madam,
I am pursuing third year engineering in ECE. My aggregate is around 8.75. I want to do a master’s in aeronautical field in USA or Canada. Which are the good universities for this course? Also, is it better to do an internship, work for a year and then apply?
Apurva

Dear Apurva,
University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, Purdue University, Virginia Tech, University of Maryland, Pennsylvania State University, University of California Davis, North Carolina State University, University of Alabama Huntsville, University of California San Diego, and University of California Irvine are some of the well known US Universities for Aeronautical Engineering. In Canada, the universities that are good for your area are McGill, University of Toronto, University of British Columbia and Carleton. Take up internships while pursuing your BE during holidays. There is no need to take a year off to work. Prepare well for the GRE and score 320 or above. Also, take the TOEFL iBT exam. You can apply to universities when you start the final year.
