Congress party suffered a huge setback in the by-election for Mysuru City Corporation’s ward 32 as its candidate lost deposit. JD(S) candidate SBM Manju defeated his nearest rival K Madesh from BJP by a margin of 307 votes.  The results of the bypoll held on July 2 were announced on Wednesday.

Of the 4,923 votes polled, Manju secured 2,424 votes and was declared winner. While Madesh managed to get 2,117. Congress candidate B K Prakash secured just 329 votes and lost his deposit. Independent candidates Mangala Gowri and B J Mahabalraj managed to obtain 17 and 12 votes, respectively. As many as 24 voters opted for NOTA (None of the Above).

The results were announced within an hour of counting which was held at Maharaja Sanskrit Patashala on Sayyaji Rao Road in the city. Election officer Priyadarshini issued the certificate to Manju declaring him the winner. Mayor M J Ravikumar and MCC Commissioner G Jagadeesh were present.

With Manju emerging as winner, JD(S) managed to continue its hold on the ward.  The bypoll was necessitated as the membership of Mahadesh, alias ‘Avva’ Madesha (JD-S), was cancelled after he was convicted in a double murder case on February 26, 2016.

The results of the bypoll will, however, not have any impact on the administration as JD(S) and BJP have aligned to form the ruling alliance.

A large number of JD(S) workers, who gathered near the counting centre from morning, celebrated Manju’s victory.
