TN theatres call off strike

The indefinite strike by more than 1,000 theatres in Tamil Nadu opposing the GST ended on Thursday after the state government agreed to form a panel to examine the issue.

A decision was taken at a meeting between senior state ministers, including Local Administration Minister S P Velumani, and representatives  of the Tamil Nadu Film Chamber of Commerce (TNFCC) at the secretariat on Thursday.

TNFCC had organised the strike, demanding that the state government withdraw the local taxes since the 30% municipal tax in addition to the 28% GST would severely affect the industry’s sustenance and livelihood of thousands of workers.

“The ministers and officials understand our problem,” said TNFCC president Abirami Ramanathan.
