The flash protest by BMRCL staff on Friday triggered heavy congestion on major roads around Metro stations as commuters thronged bus stands and boarding points in large numbers to catch BMTC buses, cabs, autorickshaws and even private vehicles to reach their destinations.

According to the traffic police, the congestion began around 8 am and lasted till noon.

“Most roads at every Metro station were congested as people looked for alternative transport to reach their destinations,” said a senior police officer. “There was a surge in traffic as commuters booked cabs or reached their destinations by private vehicles.”

Police said traffic slowed down on Platform Road, Sheshadri Road, KR Circle, Mysore Bank Circle, Nrupathunga Road, Magadi Road, Infantry Road, Raj Bhavan Road, Chalukya Circle, Shivananda Circle, Mysuru Road, Central, KG Road, Railway Parallel Road, Indiranagar 80 Feet Road, Halasuru, Baiyappanahalli, Chord Road, Malleswaram, City Market, Yeshwantpur, Mehkri Circle, Jayanagar, JP Nagar and Basavanagudi.

There was a traffic jam on JC Road, Town Hall, Old High Grounds junction and Chalukya Circle. At many places, police manually controlled traffic by deploying additional men.

The approaching weekend also contributed to the congestion. Four-wheelers and autorickshaws were seen in large numbers. Police said the situation was back to normal by 2 pm.
