Only 45 locations identified to set up Indira Canteens

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has so far identified only 45 locations to set up state government’s flagship programme Indira Canteens, offering tiffin and meals at subsidised rates, though barely a month remains for the project launch.

The state government had planned to launch the project across 198 wards in one go on August 15. However, preparations are quite tardy. The hunt for open spaces is still in progress.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had announced the canteen project in March and had directed the BBMP to identify locations. The Palike had identified some parks and playgrounds too in the rush to find suitable locations. Later, it withdrew fearing severe backlash from public and possible wrath of law, which bars any construction activity in parks and playgrounds.

A few locations identified by the BBMP were so narrow that trucks bringing pre-cast material from Krishnagiri in Tamil Nadu could not enter the designated places. The Palike had to thus give up its plan.

Meanwhile, the Palike has not yet zeroed in on the agency that will cook meals. On July 19, tenders will be invited and once the agency is finalised, the Palike will train them on how to implement the project.
