Delhi Imam writes to Sharif
The Shahi Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid has asked Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to get separatist leaders and militant youth to agree to a ceasefire to resolve the unrest in the Valley. This is the first time that Syed Ahmed Bukhari has sent out such an appeal to the prime minister.

Bukhari said the common people of Kashmir are in a state of terror and helplessness as they find their dreams for peace shattered. “The Kashmir situation can neither be solved through guns and stones nor through military expeditions. We should create an environment conducive for talks at the earliest. Through an exchange of views and dialogue on larger issues, we should formulate a strategy that is in the interest of both nations,” he said in a letter to Sharif, sent on June 22.

“Thousands of people are living under the shadow of AK-47s, a life besieged by bloodshed. It is unbelievable that people all over the world once considered the Kashmir Valley paradise on Earth as today it has become an abattoir. This game of death and destruction is making the situation serious. The only realistic recourse is peace and parleys,” he said.
