Oilmax Stag Yoddhas registered a commanding 16-11 victory over RP-SG Mavericks in the CEAT Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) at the Thyagaraj Stadium on Sunday.

For Yoddhas, Doo Hoi Kem, Manika Batra and Quadri Aruna scored crucial wins.
World No 31 from Portugal Apolonia provided Mavericks with a solid start, as he thumped Jubin Kumar 11-5, 11-6, 11-9 in the men’s singles.

Doo Hoi Kem, however, made it 3-3 for the Yoddhas as she subdued 17-year-old Bengaluru teenager Archana Kamath 11-9, 11-3, 11-6 in the women’s singles.

In the mixed doubles, Quadri and Batra quelled a spirited challenge of Mavericks’ Sharath Kamal and Sofia Polcanova 11-10, 8-11, 11-8 to put Oilmax Stag Yoddhas ahead 5-4.

However, Apolonia returned to assert his class. He won his second match of the day when he brushed aside Croatian Tomislav Pucar 11-5, 11-9, 11-5 in the men’s singles to help Mavericks jump to a 7-5 lead after four matches.

But Doo Hoi Kem handed a 11-9, 11-7, 11-5 drubbing to Austrian world No 44 Polcanova in the women’s singles to bring up her second victory for the day and once again change the equation. Her win helped Yoddhas regain the lead at 8-7.

Ace Indian paddler Sharath, however, levelled it at 9-9 for Mavericks with a 11-5, 11-3, 6-11 win over Pucar in the men’s singles as the tie headed towards an interesting finish.

Batra, playing in front of family and home crowd, then pulled off a spectacular 11-10, 9-11, 11-6 victory over Sabine Winter in the women’s singles. It helped Yoddhas take a slim 11-10 lead with two more matches to to go.

However, Quadri made it 14-10 for Yoddhas once he overpowered Stefan Fegerl  11-8, 11-0, 11-5 in the men’s singles. Russian Polina Mikhailova then rallied to beat Winter 10-11, 11-7, 11-9 in the women’s singles to help Yoddhas seal the tie.
