Last Updated 29 July 2017, 18:11 IST
Friends Ballalbagh Biruver Kudla has demanded a CBI probe into the death of Kavya, a Class 10 student of a private school in Moodbidri.

Briefing reporters here on Saturday, Biruver Kudla member Sanketh Poojary said that such incidents have been reported in different parts of the   district and had a silent burial after a few days. A high-level probe should be ordered to ensure that such incidents do not recur and to give justice to Kavya, he demanded.

He said the police statement that Kavya would have ended her life for scoring less marks in Hindi examination cannot be accepted. “It was just a class test and not a public examination. She was a sports talent and sportive spirit was inherent in her. She had not even showed any sign of depression while speaking to her parents on the previous day (July 19),” he said.

Answers to a few questions like why the body of Kavya was lowered even before the parents reached the hostel, whose saree she has used for committing suicide and why did the physical education teacher call for a practice at 4.30 am, are yet to be answered by the school authorities, he said.

Poojary said the CCTV footage only has a footage of her going out of the hostel and not her entry into the hostel. It was a tragedy that Kavya had decided to end her life within one-and-half-a-month after getting admitted to the school, he regretted.

He said that the family of Kavya has accused the school authorities of harassing her and it was not just a suicide. “We demand a thorough investigation into her death and if it was a murder, then the culprit should be punished. All educational institutions should take measures to ensure that such incidents of suicide do not recur in the district.”

Biruver Kudla member Sahana said that the school authorities have failed to follow the legal procedure. The body was shifted to mortuary in a hurry. Even the physical education teacher should be interrogated, she demanded.

In a memorandum submitted to Additional Deputy Commissioner Kumar, Sri Rama Sene district unit has demanded a high-level probe into the death of Kavya.

“Even her friends are suspicious about her death. There is a need to bring out the truth behind this unnatural death. The case should be handed over to CID for a probe. The state government should also sanction compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the family of the deceased,” Sri Rama Sene has demanded.

ABVP protest

Meanwhile, the members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad staged a protest in front of DC’s office in Mangaluru on Saturday .

The protesters urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the case. An impartial probe should be conducted to give justice to the family of Kavya. All the unanswered questions needs be looked into by the investigation authorities, they said.

Impartial probe

A delegation of NSUI members met City Police Commissioner T R Suresh and demanded an impartial probe into the death of Kavya.

Stringent action should be initiated against the culprits, they demanded.

SFI-DYFI activists too staged a protest demanding justice in front of the DC’s office.

Kateel visits family

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel visited the house of Kavya and consoled her family members on Saturday.

Kavya’s parents expressed doubts over the death of Kavya.

“We need justice,” they said.

Kateel said that he had met her on the day of joining the school, at Kateel temple. There is a  need to probe into the death. All doubts raised by the parents should be cleared. “I will bring the issue to the notice of the state government and if needed, to the Home Ministry’s notice as well,” he said.

A mystery, a conspiracy?

Buntara Yaane Naadavara Matr Sangha president Ajit Kumar Rai Malady on Saturday said a conspiracy may be behind Kavya’s death.

Referring to the case that has gathered steam, Malady while speaking at a programme at Town Hall, said M Mohan Alva, the chairman of the educational institution where the incident has occurred, had also been a part of the recent media briefing over the issue surrounding the renaming of the Light House Hill Road.
