Rename road after Sunder Ram Shetty, demands JD(S) leader

President of Janata Dal (Secular) district unit Muhammed Kunhi on Saturday demanded the intervention of District In-charge Minister B Ramanath Rai and asked him to convince everybody to rename the stretch of Light House Hill Road after Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty.

Addressing reporters here, Kunhi said instead of blowing the issue out of proportion further, the district in-charge minister should take everbody into confidence in this regard, Kunhi demanded.

When the government issued an order in this regard on the basis of due procedures followed by council of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), after a memorandum in this regard was submitted in 2009, various communities have raised objection. While St Aloysius College authorities have been demanding for retaining the name of St Aloysius road, Muslim brethren wanted it to be named as ‘Idgah Road.’ On the other hand, Chief Whip of the Government in Legislative Council Ivan D’Souza has rallied the students in the name of protest and MLA J R Lobo has succeeded in bringing a stay order against government order.

Condemning the action of Mayor Kavita Sanil for raiding a skill game centre and massage parlour in the city, he said that being the first citizen of the city, she has many other burning issues to be taken care of.

The mayor has failed to take action against the high level of corruption in MUDA, the parking issue and rampant violation during building construction. Instead, she is indulging herself in targeting the poor.

Taking umbrage at the suspended JD(S) MLA B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan, Kunhi reminded the former that it was JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda who brought him to party fold and also played a role in  his election to Legislative Assembly.

JDS(S) corporator Abdul Azeez Kudroli said though he raised the issue of reopening of the same skill game centre and massage parlour a day after mayor raided the same, during the council meeting, no action was taken.
