The Income Tax sleuths on Wednesday raided Karnataka Energy Minister D K Shivakumar’s two houses situated in posh Safdarjung Enclave of the city, besides searching residence of one of his personal assistants. They are said to have seized huge cash.

Over two dozen I-T officials first raided the residence of Anjaneya, a clerk at Karnataka Bhavan, at Sector 6, R K Puram in wee hours. After scanning his residence for more than two hours, the taxmen took him to Shivakumar’s houses at Safdarjung Enclave in South Delhi.

The officials, who came in the private vehicles accompanied by armed CRPF personnel, were at the minister’s residence till evening. The officials were also seen carrying over half-a-dozen currency counting machines inside the houses of the minister and the clerk. A source claimed that about Rs 7.5 crore cash was seized from Delhi.

The two flats in upmarket Block 4 and 5 of Safdarjung Enclave, however, did not bear Shivakumar's name. In front of one apartment, the name ‘Suresh Sharma' name was inscribed while the other was without name plate. When large media contingent rushed to the spot after I-T sleuths swung into action, surprised neighbours were seen inquiring about the action in their surrounding.

The tax officials also took Nagaraj, a driver of Karnataka Bhavan, along with them and grilled him about the movements of Shivakumar.

Since Nagaraj was driving Shivakumar's car on Tuesday when he was in the national capital to attended a Niti Ayog meeting on power department issues, the I-T officials sought to know from him the places the minister had visited here. Anjaneya, a native of Bengaluru, would assist Shivakumar during his Delhi trips.

The Karnataka Bhavan employees were shell shocked when they saw armed policemen and a group in civil dress entered their residential complex early in the morning. When some of the employees confronted them about their intention, I-T officials reportedly warned them to keep off or they would face action.

The I-T officials straight away entered the house of Anjaneya and started searching his house. The police blocked the main gate and prevented other residents from going out for some time.

The residents, comprising mostly clerks, cooks, drivers and peons working in the Karnataka Bhavan, where flabbergasted when they came to know that taxmen were searching one of their colleague's residence.

Some of the employees known for flaunting their contacts with top politicians are now worried whether they will also come under the I-T scanner if their bosses face any probe, said an employee at Karnataka Bhavan.
