Students come up with ways to treat sewage

A group of students from Gopalan College of Engineering and Management has come up with a novel solution to provide potable water for every household.

The Integrated Urban Water management (IUWM) project by the Civil Engineering students is aimed at efficient use of water to meet various demands, including drinking and sanitation. It also involves management of stormwater and sewage.

In its study, the group found that residents of 100 flats need about 55,000 litres of water, of which 20% is used for drinking and cooking requirements. The other 80% is used for sanitation and goes down the drain with chemicals and pollutants.

The students have come up with simple way to treat the used water. Accordingly, the sewage is first treated with Alum and is then pumped into the electro coagulation tank assisted by pre-Ozonation where dissolved solids turn into suspended solids and become sediment.

Simple filters, like activated carbon and a sand filter, can separate the sediment as well as the remaining suspended particles.
