On July 24 when he demitted the office, former president Pranab Mukherjee received an emotional letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi which he tweeted on Thursday and accepted that it "touched his heart".

Modi's two-page letter addressed him as "Dear Pranab Da", is filled with admiration and gratitude and ends up with - "Rashtrapati Ji, it has been an honour to work with you as your Prime Minister!".

Modi has put in black and white his affection and respect towards the former Congress veteran leader which he had showered a few times in the past when he was in office. " Three years ago, I came to New Delhi as an outsider. The task before me was huge and challenging. In these times, you have always been a father figure and a mentor to me. Your wisdom, guidance and personal warmth have given me greater confidence and strength".

The PM personally acknowledged that Mukherjee is a " repository of knowledge" which he said is well know. "I have always marvelled at your insights on various subjects, ranging from policy to politics, economics to external affairs, and security issues to subjects of national and global importance. Your intellectual prowess has constantly helped my government and me," Modi penned.

The PM also stated that former president was very affectionate and warm in his engagements with him. "You have been so warm, affectionate and caring to me. Your one phone call asking me "I hope you are taking care of your health" was enough to fill me with fresh energy, after a long day at meetings or on a campaign tour," Modi stated.

Modi then went on to describe that despite coming from two different streams both worked with synergy. "..Our political journeys took shape in different political parties. Our ideologies, at time, have been different. Our experiences are also varied. My administrative experience was from my state, whereas you have seen the expanse of our national polity and politics for decades. Yet, such is the strength of our intellect and wisdom that we were able to work together with synergy".

The PM said Mukherjee's legacy will continue to guide him and others and that he stood as a great source of inspiration for the people of the country. "India will always be proud of you, a President who was a humble public servant and exceptional leader," he insisted.

The PM also conveyed his best wishes to Mukherjee for his future endeavours.
