'Mother's milk, the best food for infants'

Last Updated 04 August 2017, 18:08 IST

Children should not be deprived of mother’s milk, reminded Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences director Dr Mahendra.

He was speaking after inaugurating the World Breastfeeding Week at the maternity and children’s ward at the district hospital in Madikeri on Wednesday.

“One-third of the children in the world suffer from malnutrition. The reason for the deaths of 50% of children between the age of one and five years is malnutrition. The infant should be fed with only breast milk during the first six months. Also, the colostrum produced soon after child birth should be fed to the child to provide immunity,” said the director.

“World Breastfeeding Week is observed during the first week of August to create awareness regarding the importance of breastfeeding and the supplementary nutrition.

“It has been noticed that there is lack of awareness among lactating mothers on maternity and child health. Some mothers have not been giving due attention to breastfeeding amidst their respective busy schedules.
“Also, there are some myths connected with breast feeding. People should visit the nearest health centre to clear their doubts on child nutrition,” he added.

District RCH Officer Dr Nilesh said that the programme was implemented in the nation in 1992. The purpose of the campaign is still relevant.

Dr Ramachandra, Dr Purushottama, Dr Rajeshwari, Mary Nanaiah and others were present on the occasion.
