Indefinite stir for Cauvery water enters day 3

Last Updated 04 August 2017, 18:15 IST

The indefinite protest launched by Raita Sangha and Hasiru Sene against the state government demanding release of water to canals from dams, entered its third day on Friday.

Sene women’s wing president Nandini Jayaram said that farmers are the backbone of the country and it is the responsibility of the government to protect the interest of farmers. “The present governments have failed to protect farmers. Even though the farmers have been facing severe problems, the government is not bothered about resolving them. The state government should release water to the canals immediately,” she said.

“It is necessary to supply drinking water to Bengaluru but the government should ensure sufficient water to crops. Politicians are not committed towards resolving issues and are not bothered about the welfare of farmers. Our farmers are capable of supplying food to the whole world if they get support. It is not a big issue for the governments to extend help to farmers but due to politics, the governments have failed to support farmers,” she said.

Farmer leaders M V Rajegowda, Shambuhalli Suresh, Haniyambadi Nagaraju, Krishnegowda, Haluvadi Srinivas, Shankar, Sannegowda, Shivalli Appaji and Chandru were present.
